Mumbai Bombs Frighten Tourists

Zurich. Agenda-Setting affects not only the attitudes but the behavior of the people as well. This shows a MEDIA TENOR analysis of the impact of bad news on tourism. The study demonstrates that the total volume of negative news counts: During the autumn of 2008 travel to India remained on a stable growth path despite the ominous signs of the global financial crisis– and contrary to the overall development for the region. But the Mumbai bomb attacks affected travel figures in December immediately and hit India tourism severely.
For this study 1,397 news stories focusing on India in 19 international TV news programs have been analyzed. Travel data: UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, Vol. 7, No. 1 (January 2009)
